FODMAPs are a collection of carbohydrates (sugars) that aren’t absorbed properly in the gut, which can trigger symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and similar gastrointestinal disorders.
In many parts of the world, the low FODMAP diet is now considered a front line therapy for IBS. But following the diet is incredibly challenging and involves cutting out a complex assortment of foods. There are very few products that are low FODMAP certified, putting the onus of gut comfort on the individual.
FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are the carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly.
Most people don’t have issues with all 5 FODMAPs. Through elimination dieting and reintroduction, individual FODMAPs are isolated to best understand which ones are most problematic, and which, if any, can be consumed without discomfort.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the brain-gut connection is real. A higher than normal percentage of people with IBS and functional bowel problems develop depression and anxiety.
We love food and hate the idea that an upset stomach could not only be uncomfortable but also contribute to emotional strain. While a happy belly doesn’t always equal a happy mind, it’s a good place to start.
